Anrich Nortje was not named CSA’s list of centrally contracted players recently.

South Africa speedster Anrich Nortje will reportedly take a break from long-form cricket and has excused himself from test cricket to focus on T20 for the 2024-25 season. His name was curiously missing from the list of Cricket South Africa centrally contracted players which was released recently.

According to the Future Tours Programme, South Africa are set to tour the West Indies in August, where they will play two tests. They will follow that up with a trip to Bangladesh for another two tests, before finishing the year with two series at home against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Nortje missed last year’s ODI World Cup in India as well as this year’s SA20 tournament due to a stress fracture in his lower back. The 30-year-old returned to action in the domestic T20 Challenge and is now competing in the IPL 2024.

“Anrich Nortje is still part of our plans”- CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe

After Nortje was not awarded a national contract for the 2024 season, CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe told Rapport newspaper that the player intends to focus on T20 cricket next season to improve his body before returning to longer formats.

“We had a few conversations with Anrich… [He] is still part of our plans. He has asked for time and space to focus on T20 cricket over the next 12 months. He is not retiring from any formats. His focus is to strengthen his body and get physically fit build towards ODI cricket and maybe be ready for the Champions Trophy tournament in 2025 if his body responds well,” CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe was quoted in media reports.

Nortje has reportedly shown his availability for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.
