Anrich Nortje took two wickets for seven runs in the semi-final against Afghanistan.
The South African pace trio of Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje were all over the Afghanistan batters during the semi-final 1 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Trinidad. The Proteas blasted out Afghanistan for only 56 runs, their lowest total in T20Is to enter their first-ever ICC men’s World Cup final, ODI or T20I.
Jansen and Rabada took the first five Afghanistan wickets in the first five overs, effectively sealing the semi-final in the powerplay only. Nortje turned up and raised the heat further to dismiss Azmatullah Omarzai and then knocked out Rashid Khan’s off-stump from the ground.
In his three-over spell, Nortje returned with figures of 2/7. Wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi took the remaining three Afghan wickets.
Anrich Nortje and Rashid Khan were involved in a verbal battle; the fast bowler castles Rashid:
With South Africa on top, Nortje pounced on Rashid with both ball and words. In Nortje’s first over, when Rashid came in to bat after Omarzai’s wicket, Nortje sledged the Afghanistan skipper twice after bowling two dot balls. There were a few stares and words exchanged between the two.
Khan was unimpressed with Nortje sledging him and walked down the pitch. Rashid also had a brief chat with the South African captain Aiden Markram about Nortje’s sledging.
When Nortje returned for his second spell a few overs later, he started with another dot ball to Rashid. On the second ball, he bowled the Afghan skipper, uprooting his off-stump out of the ground. Rashid tried to dab a good length ball towards third man but was beaten by the pace of Nortje and saw his off-stump get knocked over.
Nortje looked at the mess of the stumps before turning around and walking back to celebrate with his teammates.
