Arshdeep Singh is India’s highest wicket-taker at the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

As India defeated Australia in their last Super 8 match and qualified for the semi-finals of ICC T20 World Cup 2024, fast bowler Arshdeep Singh continues to make great progress in T20I cricket. Arshdeep was the top wicket-taker in the match against Australia. Opening the bowling for India, he stood out by dismissing David Warner early, giving India a strong start.

In his final spell, Arshdeep returned to take the wickets of both Matthew Wade and Tim David in the same over, effectively ending Australia’s chances of winning. The left-arm seamer finished with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 37 runs in his four overs.

He now holds the record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. He achieved this during the Super 8 match against Australia in St. Lucia on Monday, surpassing RP Singh’s 2007 World Cup tally of 12 wickets. Arshdeep now boasts 15 wickets in 6 matches in this edition.

Following India’s win over Australia, Arshdeep heaped praise on ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah for providing the crucial support needed to take wickets. Arshdeep, after taking 3 wickets against Australia, spoke at the post-match press conference about how Bumrah absorbed pressure from the batters, allowing him to bowl freely and secure wickets.

“I guess a lot of credit goes to Jassi bhai because he puts a lot of pressure on the batters – he gives, what, three or four runs in an over – so batters are coming hard against me, and I just have to try and bowl my best ball and there are a lot of chances of getting wickets there,” Arshdeep said. “On the other end they see the runs are not coming and the asking rate is going high, so they take more risks against me. [There’s a] chance always of getting a wicket there. So a lot of credit for my wickets goes to Jassi bhai.”

Bumrah also bowled well, taking the crucial wicket of Travis Head, who threatened to take the match away from India with a knock of 76 off 43 balls. Bumrah’s figures were 4-0-29-1, and he effectively prevented the Australian batters from unleashing big shots in the death overs.

After defeating Australia, India will lock horns with Jos Buttler-led England in the semi-final on Thursday, June 27, at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.
