India's tour of South Africa 2024
Arshdeep Singh becomes first ever Indian fast bowler to pick a 5-fer against South Africa in ODIs

Arshdeep Singh ended with bowling figures of 5/37 in the first ODI against South Africa.
Arshdeep Singh etched his name in the record books by becoming the first-ever Indian fast bowler to claim a fifer against South Africa in one-day internationals (ODIs). India took on South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg for the first ODI of India’s tour of South Africa 2023-24.
South African innings began on a shaky note as Arshdeep Singh delivered a masterful performance, wreaking havoc with his precise and incisive bowling. Reeza Hendricks, Tony de Zorzi, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen, and Andile Phehlukwayo all fell victim to Arshdeep Singh’s lethal deliveries, securing him a five-wicket haul. His remarkable figures of 5 for 37 played a pivotal role in restricting South Africa to a modest total of 116 runs in 27.3 overs.
Arshdeep creates history
The fall of wickets was relentless, with Arshdeep Singh leading the charge and dismantling South African batting line-up. His disciplined and controlled bowling earned him appreciations as he exploited the conditions at Wanderers Stadium to perfection.
India, chasing a target of 117 runs, responded with a steady and composed batting display. Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad departed early, but Sai Sudharsan and Shreyas Iyer took charge of the innings. Sudharsan’s unbeaten half-century, along with Iyer’s brisk knock of 52 runs, guided India to a comfortable victory with 117/2 in 16.4 overs.
Arshdeep’s stellar performance added a new chapter to India’s cricket history, especially for fast bowlers. He is the only fast bowler in the list of bowlers who picked a fifer against Proteas in ODIs.
