Former South African batter Herschelle Gibbs is not happy with the fitness of Temba Bavuma.

South African skipper Temba Bavuma didn’t have a great day personally at Supersport Park in Centurion as he had to limp off the field due to a hamstring injury. Temba Bavuma didn’t come back to the field for South Africa during entire India innings. Vice-captain Dean Elgar took charge in Bavuma’s absence and led South African attack against Indian batting line-up.

This is the second time in the last two months that Temba Bavuma has suffered a hamstring injury and had to limp off the field mid-action. Bavuma also had to skip the first few games of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 for South Africa and had to limp off against Afghanistan in Ahmedabad. Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs has not taken this well and severely criticised Bavuma’s fitness.

Herschelle Gibbs hits out at Temba Bavuma

Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs called Temba Bavuma ‘overweight’ and also questioned his place in Proteas squad. Gibbs tweeted, “Ironic that the coach allows some players who are clearly unfit and overweight to play when he started off as proteas trainer in 2009.” Herschelle Gibbs didn’t look happy with the way Temba Bavuma is continuously missing the action.

Temba Bavuma is currently undergoing treatment as the medical team is having daily medical evaluations to determine his participation in the ongoing game. Bavuma underwent scans after walking out of the action on the first day’s play and the scans revealed a left hamstring strain. Bavuma’s participation in the ongoing test match is still doubtful.

Temba Bavuma had a tough two to three months on the field due to hamstring injuries. Bavuma complained of a similar problem before the World Cup semi-final against Australia, but still went on to play the game. He was criticised for this decision and putting himself at risk. Talking about the ongoing match, India were bowled out for 245 in the first innings after KL Rahul’s magnificent century in 133 balls.
