A total of seven Indians are scheduled to take part in the competition.
India’s top ranked men’s singles shuttler, HS Prannoy, is set to start next season by taking part in the Malaysia Open 2024 – Super 1000 tournament. The world championships bronze medallist will meet Anders Antonsen who recently finished semifinalists at the BWF World Tour Finals 2023. The 68th edition of Malaysia Open 2023 starts on 9th January in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Meanwhile, world no.1 Viktor Axelsen will begin his title defence against former world champion Loh Kean Yew. A total of three Indian men’s singles players have made the cut for the premier competition with Priyanshu Rajawat missing out.
In the men’s doubles section, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty have a tough task in hand as they are scheduled to take Indonesia’s Muhammad Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana. The Indian duo had a good 2023 season winning Badminton Asia Championships and Asian Games. However, they were unlucky to miss out from qualifying for the World Tour Finals 2023.
PV Sindhu continues to recover from the injury she suffered during French Open and is most likely to return in February, 2024. With Sindhu’s non-participation, none of the other women’s singles players made the cut. Upcoming women’s doubles pair Ashwini Ponnappa-Tanisha Crasto will be playing in their maiden Super 1000 event next year.
The Indian duo had a remarkable end to the 2023 season by reaching the final of Syed Modi International, Guwahati Masters and Odisha Masters. They reached career-high WR-24 after winning the Guwahati Masters. Their compatriots Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand who had earlier registered for the tournament have withdrawn from the competition. None of the mixed doubles pair will be taking part with the entry rankings too high for the cut-off.
