While the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) started in 1996, their battle in the longest format of the game dates back to 1947, when India toured Australia for a five-match series. The iconic rivalry has produced some of the most remarkable performances in test history.

5. Allan Border – 1567 runs
Legendary Australia captain Allan Border is credited for transforming the Australian team into a cricketing powerhouse during his tenure. Besides being a brilliant tactician, Border was also one of the best batsmen of his time, and was prolific against India.
Border scored 1567 test runs against India at an average of 52.23, cracking four centuries and nine fifties in 20 tests.
One of his most memorable knocks against India came in 1985 at Melbourne, where he scored a gritty 163 to help Australia secure a draw. The test series between India and Australia was named the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 1996 to honor his legacy.
4. Matthew Hayden – 1888 runs
Matthew Hayden is considered one of the most successful foreign batsmen to tour India in test cricket. Nicknamed “Haydos,,” Hayden amassed 1888 runs against India at an outstanding average of 59.
One of his most memorable innings came against India in Chennai in 2001, when he top-scored for Australia in the first innings with his excellent knock of 203 runs.
3. Steve Smith – 2042 runs
Modern-day great Steve Smith boasts an exceptional record against India with 2042 test runs to his name at an average of 65.87. Smith’s most memorable series against India came in 2014 where he smacked four test centuries, playing a pivotal role in Australia’s 2-0 series win.
Smith’s brilliant hundred on a turning track in Pune during the 2017 series is often hailed as one of the best innings by a visiting batsman in India. He also holds the record for scoring the most test centuries (9) for Australia against India.
2. Michael Clarke – 2049 runs
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke scored 2049 runs against India in his test career at an average of 53.92 with seven tons. One of the finest players against spin, Clarke announced his arrival in test cricket with a sensational hundred in Bengaluru in 2004.
Clarke’s best test innings came against India in 2012 in Sydney, where he toyed with the Indian bowling attack to amass an unbeaten triple-century (329*).
1. Ricky Ponting – 2555 runs
One of, if not Australia’s greatest test batsman, Ricky Ponting holds the record for scoring the most test runs for Australia against India with 2555 runs in 29 tests at an average of 54.36. Ponting’s impressive tally includes eight centuries and 12 half-centuries against India.
His highest test score of 257 came at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2003, where he dismantled the Indian bowling attack to guide Australia to a famous nine wickets victory.
