After defeating the Netherlands, Bangladesh are ranked second in the Group D standings.
From Group D at the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Aiden Markram-led South Africa became the first to book their birth in the Super Eight stage when they registered three wins on a trot. However, the fight for second place is getting heated up between three teams: Bangladesh, the Netherlands, and Nepal. Sri Lanka, who have one point in three games, are already out of the race for Super 8.
The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led Bangladesh won their crucial match against Scott Edwards-led Netherlands at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St. Vincent, on June 13. After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh veteran batter Shakib Al Hasan played a fantasic knock of 64* runs, which helped them reach 159/5 in 20 overs.
While chasing 160 runs, Dutch batter Sybrand Engelbrecht’s 33-run knock and skipper Edwards’ 25 runs went in vain as they lost the match by 25 runs. Bangladesh spinner Rishad Hossain picked up a three-wicket haul.
What is the qualification scenario for Bangladesh after defeating the Netherlands?
After winning the crucial match against the Netherlands, Shanto-led side now have two victories from three Group Stage matches. The Shanto-led side now have four points with NRR of 0.478 and are placed second in the Group D standings.
On the other hand, the Netherlands have lost two games out of the three they have played till now. The Dutch side are ranked third with two points and NRR of -0.408.
In order to qualify for the Super Eight Stage, Bangladesh need to win their final group stage match against Nepal on June 17 (Monday) at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent.
If Shanto-led side loses against Nepal, they should hope that the Netherlands lose their last match against Sri Lanka and Nepal lose their last match against South Africa, to qualify for the Super 8.
