Bangladesh suffered a defeat by four runs against South Africa while chasing the target of 114 runs.
South Africa became the first team at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 to qualify for the Super 8 round after they recorded their third victory of the group by defeating Bangladesh by four runs in New York.
On another spicy pitch at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, the Proteas’ bowlers produced a brilliant performance to restrict the Asian team to 109 while defending 113. This game came just a day after India defended 119 against Pakistan, winning by six runs.
As for Bangladesh, this was their second game of the tournament. Having won their first match against Sri Lanka, the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side suffered their first defeat. This was a heart-breaking defeat for them, as they came very close to beating South Africa for the first time in men’s T20Is. However, the Proteas will now continue their perfect record of 9-0 against the Bangla Tigers in the shortest format.
How can Bangladesh qualify for Super 8 round after losing to South Africa?
If Bangladesh, who have two points in two games, win their remaining two matches, they will reach six points and qualify for the Super 8 round.
If they win one out of two matches, they will reach four points and then they would have to hope that the Netherlands earn a maximum of two points in their remaining two encounters.
There is a chance that both Bangladesh and Netherlands finish the group with four points and then it would come down to net run rate. Sri Lanka are also in the fray. They can win their next two matches against Netherlands and Nepal, but need big wins to boost their net run rate.
