Top 5 batsmen fastest to score 5000 runs in IPL

Only eight batsmen have scored over 5000 runs in the IPL so far.
While hitting a century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a rare achievement, reaching a thousand runs is an equally challenging task. While no batsman has touched the mark of 10,000 runs in the IPL so far, there are quite a few who have crossed 5000 runs in the cash-rich league.
Over the last 18 seasons, a total of eight batters have touched the mark of 5000 runs in the tournament. Among them, three have already pulled the curtains down on their IPL careers. The three legends of Indian cricket and IPL – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni are also among the batters to touch the 5000-run mark in the league. However, none of them were the fastest to reach the mark.
While former CSK stalwart Suresh Raina was the first batsman to reach 5000 runs in IPL, he was not the fastest batter to reach the milestone. Below, we elaborate on the list of the top five fastest batsmen to score 5000 runs in the tournament.
Top 5 batsmen fastest to score 5000 runs in IPL
5. Shikhar Dhawan- 168 innings
Shikhar Dhawan captures the fifth spot on this list. The former India opener reached the milestone of 5000 runs in 168 innings. Dhawan was one of the most successful batsmen in the IPL. He also held the spot of highest run-scorer in the tournament at one time.
He accounts for over 6500 runs in the tournament including two centuries. Dhawan represented Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the debut season 2008. Later, he also represented teams like Mumbai Indians (MI), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Punjab Kings (PBKS). He retired from the tournament after the 2024 season.
4. AB de Villiers- 161 innings
Former RCB star AB de Villiers grabs the fourth spot on this list. The former South Africa skipper took 161 innings to reach the milestone. Notably, he was one of the most dangerous batters in the league during his active years.
He also got the title of 360-degree player with his ability to smack runs with pace in the T20s. The right-handed batsman retired from the tournament after reaching 5162 runs across 184 games. He also slammed three centuries and 40 fifties in the tournament.
3. Virat Kohli- 157 innings
Virat Kohli, who was the first batsman to score over 8000 runs in the IPL, bags the third position on this list. The former RCB skipper needed 157 innings to reach 5000 runs in the tournament. Notably, Kohli and de Villiers etched multiple 100+ partnerships for RCB.
The right-handed batter joined the RCB franchise in his debut season 2008. He also led the side for many seasons before stepping down.
2. David Warner – 135 innings
Former SRH captain David Warner clinches the second spot on this list. Arguably, David Warner can be termed the most powerful opener in the league’s history. The former Australia opener was known to smack runs at a high strike rate and always played as an opener in the IPL.
He took 135 innings to reach the milestone of 5000 runs. Warner also won the Orange Cap during three seasons – IPL 2015, IPL 2017, and IPL 2019 – which is most by any batter. He was a member of SRH during these editions.
1. KL Rahul – 130 innings
Indian batter KL Rahul steals the top spot on this list as he reached the milestone in just 130 innings. The right-handed batsman leapfrogged Warner from the top spot in IPL 2025 during a clash between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
Representing DC in the 40th match of IPL 2025, he not only completed 5000 career runs in the IPL, but also helped his team grab a stunning victory by eight wickets. The wicket-keeper batter won the Orange Cap in the 2020 season while representing Punjab Kings.
