BCCI approaches Gautam Gambhir for Indian Cricket Team head coach role - Reports

Currently, Gautam Gambhir is working as Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor in the IPL 2024.

A few days ago, the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) invited applications to hire new head coach for the Men in Blue. Currently, legendary player Rahul Dravid is serving as Indian head coach, and his tenure will come to an end in June after the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. 

Previously, Dravid’s tenure ended after the ODI World Cup 2023, but the BCCI re-appointed him and his support staff to extend their contracts for a few more months with the T20 World Cup in mind.

However, few reports emerged that the former Indian cricketer Dravid is not keen to apply for the head coach role once again. The deadline for applying for the head coach job is May 27, a day after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final.

During Dravid’s tenure as head coach, India won their first major trophy by defeating Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Men in Blue also reached the ODI World Cup final and the World Test Championship Final in 2023. However, they lost both championship matches against Australia.

BCCI approaches Gautam Gambhir for the head coach role

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Gautam Gambhir, who is currently the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing IPL 2024, has been approached by the BCCI for the head coach role. The report further added that Dravid hasn’t communicated to the Indian cricket board about extending his tenure.

The 2007 World T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup winner Gambhir, has no coaching experience at the international or domestic level. Gambhir’s first role in any support staff for a cricket team came in IPL 2022 when he joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as mentor of the side.

He was a mentor at the Lucknow franchise for the IPL 2022 and 2023 seasons and during his tenure with the Super Giants they reached the playoffs both the times. Gambhir then joined KKR as mentor for the IPL 2024 edition. In the ongoing season, Kolkata are currently ranked at the top of the points table and KKR also became the first team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs.
