A target above 300 runs has been chased only once successfully in test cricket at the MCG.

The fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) stands on the knife edge leading to the final day.

The game has been full of twists and turns, with Australia dominating the first two days, followed by a spirited fightback from India on day 3. Day 4 saw both teams sharing the honours.

Once reduced to 191/6, Nitish Kumar Reddy led India’s fightback with his maiden test ton to propel the visitors to 369 runs in response to Australia’s 474 in the first innings.

With a strong 105-run lead, Australia looked set to declare before the end of day 4 and apply pressure on India. However, a four-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah, supported by Mohammed Siraj‘s three-fer reduced the hosts to 94/6.

As has been the case throughout the series, Australia fought back again, with Marnus Labuschagne (70) and Pat Cummins (41) adding 57 runs for the seventh wicket. Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland then frustrated India with a 55-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Australia finished the day at 228/9, holding a 333-run lead. With all three results still possible on the final day, Australia will fancy their chances to knock over the fragile Indian top-order.

On that note, let’s take a look at the highest successful run chase at the MCG in test cricket.

Highest run chase at the MCG in test cricket dates back to 1929 during third test of England’s tour of Australia.

Facing a small 20-run deficit, Australia responded strongly, scoring 351 runs in their second innings. Don Bradman starred for the hosts, making 112 runs off 281 balls, including seven fours before setting the visitors a target of 332 runs..

Herbert Sutcliffe’s 135-run knock guided England to successfully chase down the mammoth target of 332 runs by three wickets.
