BGT 2024-25: Top 3 Indian bowlers in current squad with most wickets in Australia in test cricket
Among Indian bowlers, Kapil Dev has taken the most wickets in Australia in test cricket.
The India vs Australia rivalry in test cricket is now being hailed as the most competitive rivalry in the longest format of the game, with many placing it on par with the Ashes.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series over the past decade has been highly competitive. India have won the last four BGT series, including twice on Australian soil. The last time Australia beat India in a test series was at home in 2014/15.
Indian bowlers have played the leading role in the team’s exceptional performances in Australia on the last two tours. A few of these bowlers are part of the upcoming BGT 2024-25.
In this article, we will look at the three Indian bowlers among the current squad members who have taken the most wickets on Australian soil in tests.
BGT 2024-25: Top three Indian bowlers in current squad with most wickets in Australia in test cricket
3. Ravindra Jadeja – 14 wickets
Ravindra Jadeja has played four tests in Australia on the last two trips and has played a key role with the ball in India’s success. Jadeja, in fact, has quite an outstanding record for a spinner in Australia.
In four tests, he’s taken 14 wickets at an average of 21.78 and crucially, has maintained a very tidy economy of 2.41. Jadeja’s control over the run-flow meant that the pacers could be rotated for short bursts.
His best innings figures of 4/62 came in the Sydney test in 2021.
2. Jasprit Bumrah – 32 wickets
Jasprit Bumrah played the leading role with the ball in India’s twin series triumphs in Australia in 2018/19 and 2020/21. Out of the eight tests across these two tours, he featured in seven, missing out on the Gabba test due to an injury.
In seven tests in Australia, Bumrah has taken 32 wickets at an excellent average of 21.25 and an economy of 2.47. His best innings bowling figures of 6/33 came at the MCG in the 2018 series. India won that test by 137 runs and Bumrah was named the Man of the Match.
1. Ravichandran Ashwin – 39 wickets
Among the current squad members, R Ashwin has the most wickets in Australia. He’s been touring Australia since 2011 and the upcoming series will be his fifth test series down under, and most likely his last given he is 38 years old.
In 10 tests in Australia, Ashwin has taken 39 wickets at an average of 42.15. While his bowling average is poor, Ashwin’s economy of 2.93 is good. He’s especially been impressive in the last two tours, picking up 18 wickets in four tests at an average of 27.50 and an economy of 2.23.
His best of 4/55 in Australia came in the Adelaide test in 2020.
