Virat Kohli backed Mohammed Siraj for the short ball plan against Travis Head.
Having endured two consecutive centuries from Travis Head, India finally managed to dismiss the left-hander cheaply as he was out for 17 runs in Australia’s second innings of the Gabba test, though that was also the case of Australian batsmen playing attacking cricket as they aimed for a declaration.
Nonetheless, after a long time of suffering from Head, India might have finally unlocked the chink in Head’s armor as Mohammed Siraj dismissed him with a back-of-length delivery on day 5 at the Gabba.
This ploy was backed by Virat Kohli even as captain Rohit Sharma wanted to employ another tactic.
The stump mic caught an interesting conversation between Kohli and Sharma when Siraj came on to bowl to Head.
Rohit asked Siraj to bowl to Head from around the wicket. However, as Kohli was walking past them, he suggested Siraj bowl over the wicket to the left-hander.
While Sharma opined that it would be easier for Head to open up his legs if Siraj bowls from over the wicket, Kohli explained the strategy to cramp Head for room if Siraj bowls into the line of the stumps with a scrambled seam.
Kohli convinced Rohit to go with his tactic and it worked as Head top-edged his pull shot to a short-of-length delivery from Siraj that was into Head’s body. The top-edge was safely taken by Rishabh Pant.
