Mitchell Starc is hopeful of clinching back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from India in the upcoming series.

Hailing Team India’s strength, senior Australia pacer Mitchell Starc has put the importance of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy right up with the historic Ashes series.

Australia are set to host India for a long five-match test series, starting November 2022 and concluding on January 7.

After Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood, it is the fourth member of Australia’s famed bowling attack, Starc, that has revealed his ambitions of winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy back for Australia.

Hopefully, we have that trophy back on our shores: Mitchell Starc

Australia have lost the last four test series against India, including two of them at home; no Asian team had ever won a single test series in Australia until India in 2018/19 and they repeated the feat in 2020/21.

Starc, who is one of the few members in the current Australian side who were part of Australia’s previous test series win over India in 2014/15, recognises the importance of winning the BGT as he places it alongside the Ashes series.

“Being five matches now it’s probably right on par with an Ashes series. We always want to win every game at home and we know India are a very strong team,” Starc told Wide World Sports.

“Hopefully when we’re sitting there on the 8th of January we have that trophy back on our shores,” he added.

India and Australia are the top two teams in the World Test Championship 2023-25 points table. India are the table leader with 68.52 PCT and Australia are just behind with 62.50. Both teams are in strong positions to reach the final that will played next year in England. Australia defeated India in the WTC 2023 final.

“As we’re placed at the minute we’re the top two teams on the Test ladder… so a very exciting series coming up for the fans and certainly the players,” Starc said.
