The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee, on Tuesday, July 23, named a 16-man squad for the upcoming home T20I series against India. They will be led by new T20I skipper Charith Asalanka, who has replaced leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.
Earlier this month, Hasaranga stepped down as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain following his side’s failure to qualify for the Super Eight round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Placed in Group D, Sri Lanka finished third in the group round, behind South Africa and Bangladesh, having managed only one victory in four games. The 2014 T20 world champions were knocked out in the first round of this year’s ICC event in the USA and West Indies, leading to Hasaranga’s resignation.
Charith Asalanka to lead Sri Lanka against India
A left-handed batsman and a part-time off-spinner, Asalanka is the newest Sri Lankan T20I captain. His first assignment will be the three-match T20I series against India, starting July 27 in Pallekele. The second T20I of the series will be played on July 28 and the last match of the series on July 30. All matches will be played in Pallekele.
The 16-man squad has a similar look to the one that featured in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Asalanka recently led Jaffna Kings to the Lanka Premier League 2024 trophy defeating Galle Marvels in the final in Colombo. He has significant international experience, having featured in 59 ODIs and 47 T20Is and has been one of the first names on the Sri Lankan white-ball teams in the past four years.
