Scotland's Charlie Cassell picks 7/21 on ODI debut, breaks Kagiso Rabada's nine-year-old record
Charlie Cassell picked up seven wickets on his ODI debut match against Oman on July 22.
Scotland fast bowler Charlie Cassell broke the record for the best bowling figures on ODI debut by taking 7/21 in just 5.4 overs against Oman in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Dundee on July 22.
Cassell was included in the Scotland squad for the match against Oman as replacement for their speedster Chris Sole, who was unavailable due to personal reasons.
Scotland skipper Richie Berrington presented pacer Cassell with his debut ODI cap ahead of the match against Oman.
“You’ve come back from a huge setback, with that massive injury you had, put you out for a year and a bit. Just to see your resilience coming back, getting back on the park, and just love watching what you do at Forfs [Forfashire], and just the way how you hold yourself is incredible,” Scotland captain Richie Berrington said when presenting Cassell with his cap.
Charlie Cassell registers best bowling figures on ODI debut
On his ODI debut, Charlie showed his skills right from the start. The debutant trapped former Oman skipper Zeeshan Maqsood on his very first delivery in international cricket.
Casell’s second delivery was a peach when he breached the defense of Oman’s Ayaan Khan, making it the first ever instance of a bowler to pick wickets on first two balls in ODI cricket.
Two balls later, the Scotland pacer dismissed Khalid Kail. Cassell didn’t stop here, as he took two more wickets of Oman batters and completed his maiden five-wicket haul in ODI cricket in the 18th over Oman’s innings.
After picking his maiden ODI five-wicket haul, Cassell joined the elite list of 15 players who have picked a five-for on men’s ODI debut. The debutant then dismissed batter Pratik Athavale before ending Oman’s innings by picking the wicket of Bilal Khan. The Scotland pacer Cassell ended with figures of 7/21.
After taking a seven-wicket haul, Cassell shattered the nine-year-old record of South African pacer Kagiso Rabada, who scalped six wickets on his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2015.
