David Warner represented Australia in 112 tests, 161 ODIs and 110 T20Is.
The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 concluded with some of the legendary cricketers retiring from international cricket. From India, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced T20I retirements, while from Australia, it was David Warner who retired. The southpaw retired from ODIs and tests earlier this year, and the T20 World Cup 2024 saw him end his T20I career as well, where Australia suffered a Super 8 exit after losing to Afghanistan and India in the round.
Warner made his international debut in a T20I against South Africa in January 2009. Since then, he became the second-highest run scorer in the history of Australian cricket. Warner played for 15 years and featured in 383 matches across formats. He scored 18995 runs, with 49 centuries and 98 half-centuries.
David Warner expresses his desire to play Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan
On Monday (July 8), David Warner took it to Instagram handle and officially announced his departure from international cricket. But, he also left his doors open for u-turn from retirement in ODIs if Australia select him for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The upcoming ICC event’s hosting rights are with the last edition’s winners, Pakistan.
Warner on his Instagram post wrote, “Chapter closed!! It’s been an unbelievable experience to play at the highest level for such a long period. Australia was my team. The majority of my career was at the international level. It’s been an honour to be able to do this. 100+ games in all formats is my highlight. I will continue to play franchise cricket for a while, and I am also open to playing for Aus in the Champions trophy if selected.”
David Warner retired as one of the leading run-scorers in modern-day cricket and is the only player from Australia to play 100 or more games in all three formats. Warner’s record in 50-over ICC events is impeccable, and he is one of five players to have won an ICC event across all three formats.
It will be interesting to see what Australia’s stance will be on his selection. Notably, he has great records in Pakistan. Warner announced his ODI retirement in January this year and his last game in this format was the ODI World Cup 2023 final against India. He played 161 ODIs and scored 6932 runs at an average of 45.30 and strike rate of 97.26.
