Sourav Ganguly is Delhi Capitals’ director of cricket.

Sourav Ganguly recently one-upped Delhi Capitals (DC) as he revealed that the franchise had parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting even before the franchise officially announced the same. Ponting had been with DC since 2018 and the team had made it to their maiden IPL final under him in 2020.

However, the previous three seasons had been below par for the DC team, and with them not being able to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2024, the franchise decided to go for an overhaul. While other support staff remains the same, DC bid goodbye to Ponting and now have a vacant position in their contingent.

As per reports, the team management is not looking for any stop-gap arrangement for the head coach and is scouting for someone to bring stability to the team, especially with the IPL 2025 mega auction in line.

“The management doesn’t want a stop-gap arrangement for the head coach position as it’s the season right after the mega auction as the new cycle gets underway,” a source told News18.

Additionally, the report indicates that DC is in contact with two former World Cup-winning cricketers regarding the head coach role.

Sourav Ganguly not to be named head coach by Delhi Capitals

Following Ricky Ponting’s departure, DC have decided not to consider Sourav Ganguly for the job of head coach. Despite Ganguly’s desire, the DC administration is apprehensive about giving him multiple responsibilities as Director of Cricket and head coach, according to a News18 report.

Ganguly, the former BCCI president, currently serves as DC’s Director of Cricket. He is responsible for overseeing the franchise’s sister teams: the Dubai Capitals in ILT20 and the Pretoria Capitals in the SA T20 league.

The management believes the team needs a very hands-on coach who actively follows the cricket circuit, similar to Gambhir.

“Ganguly already has a lot of things on his plate – planning multiple things for the franchise as the Director of Cricket. The team needs a very hands-on coach who follows the circuit very aggressively. Like Gautam Gambhir does. It’s no surprise that he has been so successful as a mentor. He keeps track of players – both international and domestic,” the source explained.

DC are yet to win an IPL title, despite being one of the league’s founding eight clubs.
