Gautam Gambhir joined the Indian cricket team as India’s head coach after Rahul Dravid’s exit.

The new era in Indian cricket history has begun as Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid and taken over as senior men’s Indian Cricket Team’s head coach. The former Indian opener will start his new role when India will tour Sri Lanka in a week. India are all set to play three ODIs and as many as T20Is on this tour.

This will be played between July 27 and August 7. This will be the test of every player, as Gautam Gambhir and Dravid have two contrasting personalities and their styles of play are totally different. That’s what former Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik also reckons. The 38-year-old congratulated Gambhir for his new role and talked about two massive changes which the new head coach will bring to the team.

Dinesh Karthik was part of Kolkata Knight Riders from 2018 to 2021 and captained the team after Gautam Gambhir. Karthik feels that the former Indian opener can bring some good changes to the Indian team. In an interview with Cricbuzz, Karthik highlighted two major changes that the new head coach will bring.

He said, “He’s a very good leader. I think he will bring two things to the Indian team. One is the fact that he’s a complete players’ man. He protects his players, and that’s very important in international cricket because, at times, you can feel lonely or deserted in international cricket when performances don’t go your way. So, Gambhir is going to do that.” Karthik also pointed out how Gambhir looks at the game and is very clear about his thought process.

He said, “And number two, he’ll definitely bring a clever tactical angle to this Indian team. Very fierce, intense guy, and I always liked playing for the team and did whatever it took to win a game of cricket.” KKR won their third IPL title in 2024 recently, where Gambhir was their mentor. The franchise ended the trophy drought of 10 years. Before KKR, he was part of Lucknow Super Giants for 2022 and 2023 editions of the tournament.
