Explained: How Duleep Trophy 2024-25 champions will be crowned without final being played

The third and last round of the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 got underway on September 19.
The Duleep Trophy 2024-25 tournament, which is the 61st edition of this competition, marked the beginning of the Indian domestic season. It is a First-Class (FC) cricket tournament that got underway on September 5 and will conclude on or before September 22.
The tournament comprised four teams – India A, India B, India C, and India D. In the last few seasons, it was played in a zonal format with teams West Zone, South Zone, North Zone, and East Zone.
What is the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 format?
Each team in the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 plays the other three teams once. Interestingly, there are no knockout matches or a final. The team that finishes with the maximum points after three round of matches between all four teams will be crowned the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 champions.
Points in the Duleep Trophy are awarded based on the result and the margin of victory.
Duleep Trophy 2024-25 points system:
- Innings win/win by 10 wickets: 7
- Match outright win: 6
- 1st innings lead but no outright win: 3
- Match drawn without 1st innings lead: 1
- Match lost: 0
In the first round of the competition, India B defeated India A at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, by 76 runs, and India C defeated India D by four wickets at the Rural Development Trust Stadium, Anantapur.
The next two rounds were both played in Anantapur, at the Rural Development Trust Stadium and the Rural Development Trust Stadium B.
In the second round, India A defeated India D by 186 runs, while the match between India C and India ended in a draw.
Ahead of the third round, India C are at the top of the points table with nine points, followed by India B with seven points. India A have six points and India D have zero points.
