Eoin Morgan-led England won the ICC ODI World Cup 2019.
Current Indian Captain Rohit Sharma is in the twilight of his career, and it is understood that the BCCI selectors will soon be on the hunt for a new leader, at least in white-ball cricket. All-rounder Hardik Pandya, wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant, and speedster Jasprit Bumrah are front-runners to lead the Men in Blue after Rohit.
However, former England skipper Eoin Morgan has snubbed both Hardik and Rishabh to become the new Indian captain after Rohit steps down from his leadership responsibilities.
Currently, the Men in Blue is in New York gearing up for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Rohit-led side will look add one more ICC title into their cabinet. The Indian side will open their campaign against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 5.
Eoin Morgan namedrops Shubman Gill as future India skipper
Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, Hardik, who was the captain of Gujarat Titans (GT) was traded to Mumbai Indians. Soon after this, the Gujarat-based franchise named Shubman Gill as new captain of the side. However, Gill, had a poor run as a leader as his side GT failed to reach the IPL 2024 playoffs.
In the 2024 edition, Gill-led Gujarat played 14 games and won just five, while losing seven matches. They bagged 12 points and finished at the eighth position. Gill couldn’t replicate Hardik’s success, who led the Titans to title triumph in the IPL 2022 season and reach the 2023 final.
Even after not performing well as captain in the recently concluded IPL 2024, Gill received support from his former KKR teammate and 2019 ODI World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan.
“I played alongside Shubman Gill. I know how he thinks. I know how he works. For me, he is a future leader within that side and I think in big moments, you need the more leaders the better. Even if he is just sitting on the sideline, you need inspiration from here and there and everywhere,” Eoin Morgan said In an interaction with Sky Sports.
Eoin Morgan picks Gill over Jaiswal in the India squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup
India named their 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, and both Rinku Singh and opener Gill failed to find a place as they were added to traveling reserves.
Meanwhile, youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal found a place in India’s main squad, but former English skipper Morgan felt that Gill would have been a better pick over Jaiswal. In the IPL 2024 edition, Gill scored 426 runs, whereas Yashasvi smashed 435 runs.
“The only decision I probably would have had differently if I was selecting a squad was I have would have had Shubman Gill over Yashasvi Jaiswal,” Morgan added.
