Eoin Morgan helped England lift the ODI World Cup in 2019.
England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan has denied reports of him replacing Matthew Mott as England’s white-ball coach.
Current white-ball head coach Matthew Mott has been under a lot of pressure after England failed to defend their titles in the last two ICC white-ball tournaments.
England’s defence of both ODI and T20 World Cup titles ended in disappointing fashion. Firstly, they had a poor campaign in the World Cup 2023 in India, where they failed to reach the semi-finals. This was followed by a semi-final exit at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June. The pressure has started to mount on head coach Matthew Mott.
After a semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup 2024, England’s managing director Rob Key expressed that a review of the team’s performance will take place in the coming weeks.
I want to coach down the line: Eoin Morgan
Recently, the Times reported that current white-ball coach Mott might leave his role and England’s managing director Key was looking out for potential candidates. Morgan has been one of the names linked with the job.
Reacting to all the rumours surrounding the possibility of him becoming the new white-ball coach of the England team, Morgan admitted that he would want to coach the team down the line but not right now.
The 2019 ODI World Cup-winning skipper explained that he has a young family at the moment and wants to spend time with them. Morgan said that he is enjoying his commentary role as well.
“This news is actually news to me. It’s obviously not nice when a coach comes under fire and there is a lot of speculation about his future, but only time will tell what will happen. I’ve been asked a lot [in the media] over the past couple of months about the role, and if I would take it on,” Morgan said while commentating on the Hundred for Sky Sports.
“My answer has simply been that the timing for everything in my life at the moment is not right. Yes, I want to coach down the line. But I have a young family, and I spend a lot more time at home and watching cricket doing this [commentary]. I’m absolutely loving what I’m doing,” Morgan added.
