Varun Chakaravarthy took 5/17 in the second IND vs SA T20I at Gqeberha.

Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy recorded his maiden five-wicket haul in T20Is in the second game of the four-match IND vs SA T20I series 2024.

Carrying on from his brilliant 3/25 in the first T20I in Durban, Chakaravarthy, in Gqeberha on Friday, starred for India again, helping the visitors stage a fightback in their defence of a sub-par total of 124 runs.

Varun’s majestic spell against the Proteas included the crucial wickets of Aiden Markram, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klassen and David Miller.

In the final over of the powerplay, Varun Chakaravarthy bowled a brilliant googly to rattle Markram’s off stump. He followed it up by dismissing Reeza Hendricks with another well-directed googly.

In his last two overs, Varun delivered three crucial blows, clean bowling Marco Jansen and then dismissing two of South Africa’s key finishers, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, on consecutive deliveries to seal his five-for.

Varun’s terrific bowling effort came after Hardik Pandya carried the Indian team to a respectable total of 124. Batting first in Gqeberha, India experienced a top-order batting collapse. With the scorecard reading 70/5 on one stage, Pandya and Axar helped the Indian team in their recovery with scores of 39* and 27 respectively.

Varun’s brilliant spell has earned widespread praise, with fans taking to social media to celebrate the mystery spinner’s performance.

Twitter reactions on Varun Chakaravarthy’s maiden T20I five-wicket haul:

Meanwhile, despite Varun’s spectacular bowling performance, South Africa have won the match, courtesy of Tristian Stubbs and Gerald Coetzee’s blistering finish with the bat. The pair blasted 42* (20) together to take their side over the line and level the series.
