Faruque Ahmed has also served as the chief selector for two terms.

On August 21, 2024, former Bangladesh cricketer Faruque Ahmed was elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) following Nazmul Hassan’s resignation.

Faruque also became the first president of the BCB who has played any competitive cricket. He played seven ODIs between 1988 and 1999 and also captained Bangladesh in the ICC Trophy in 1994.

Since July, there have been severe protests by students regarding the controversial quota system in Bangladesh under the Shiekh Hasina government. The protests took a violent turn, forcing Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina to resign and flee from the country.

After Hasina’s resignation, an interim government was formed. Since then, many media reports claimed that BCB president Nazmul Hasan had agreed to quit his job. Hassan has been in hiding with his wife in London ever since the unrest in the country began.

Faruque Ahmed becomes new BCB president

Former cricketer and national selector Faruque became the new president of the BCB on Wednesday. The development was confirmed during the BCB board meeting in the ministry of youth and sports, in which the former president Hassan resigned and Ahmed was elected.

Faruque had earlier served as the chief selector of the Bangladesh cricket team for two terms: from 2003 to 2007 and from 2013 to 2016; however, he had resigned from the post without completing his second term because he didn’t accept the expansion of the three-member selection panel.
