3 franchises Suryakumar Yadav could play for if he leaves Mumbai Indians

Suryakumar Yadav has been part of Mumbai Indians since 2018.

Suryakumar Yadav has been a key member of Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the last few seasons. He made his IPL debut for MI in the 2012 edition, playing only one game. After being part of the side for two seasons, he became a member of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from 2014 to 2017. In 2018, he was again picked by Mumbai in the mega auction.

Since then, he became backbone for MI and played a crucial role in MI’s back-to-back title-winning campaigns in IPL 2019 and 2020. In IPL 2025, he finished as the highest run-scorer for the side and second-highest in the league with 717 runs. However, he failed to come good in IPL 2026, piling up just 270 runs in 13 games with two half-centuries.

On June 8, 2026, Suryakumar unfollowed Mumbai Indians on Instagram and deleted all of his posts associated with MI. His actions have led to rumours that he is expected to part ways with the side ahead of the next season.

Suryakumar is one of the legends in the IPL, and if he leaves MI, many franchises could be in a race to capture him. In this listicle, let us take a glance at three teams that can grab Suryakumar Yadav in their squad if he leaves MI.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders gave a poor show in IPL 2026, failing to make it to the playoffs for the second time in a row. Ajinkya Rahane, who was named captain ahead of the 2025 season, has failed as a batter as well as captain. KKR made many changes to their support staff ahead of IPL 2026 and they are highly expected to drop Rahane as skipper.

They need a strong captain to lead the side and Suryakumar Yadav will be the best choice. He led India to T20 World Cup 2026 and owns a stunning record as a captain. Moreover, Yadav was also part of KKR from 2014 to 2017. He was part of the Gautam Gambhir-led KKR side that won the trophy in 2014.

2. Lucknow Super Giants

Similarly, Lucknow Super Giants are another team that can rope in Suryakumar in their squad ahead of next season. LSG were the weakest team in IPL 2026, finishing at the last spot in the points table with just four victories out of 14 games.

They were the first team to be eliminated from the playoffs. After the tournament, Rishabh Pant has also quit as captain. Now, they are in need of a strong skipper and no one can be better than Suryakumar Yadav, who has a win record of over 80 per cent in T20Is for India. Notably, India never lost a bilateral series under Surya’s captaincy since the beginning of his stint in July 2024.

1. Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans (GT) have been a marvellous side in the IPL since their maiden edition in 2022. They won the title in their first season and have made it to the playoffs in four seasons out of five. However, one crucial weakness for GT is their middle order.

Batters like Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler have always managed to provide brilliant start; however, their weak middle order has hampered their progress on many occasions. Suryakumar is a fabulous batter in the middle overs and is known for his ability to handle pressure with ease. His addition will definitely help GT to strengthen their batting unit.
