Under Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship, KKR clinched the IPL 2024 trophy.
Former batsman Gautam Gambhir is all set to take over the responsibilities from Rahul Dravid and will be unveiled as the Indian men’s cricket team’s next head coach this month, according to a report in Dainik Bhaskar.
Last month, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) invited applications for new head coach for the Men in Blue team. The selected candidate will be given a three-year all-format deal, which will run till the end of the ODI World Cup 2027.
Currently, Dravid is the head coach of the Indian side. His contract will end after the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Dravid’s first contract with the Men in Blue team ended after the ICC Cricket ODI World Cup 2023, where they lost the final against Australia. However, the BCCI convinced Dravid to his contract because the next ICC tournament wasn’t far away.
Gautam Gambhir to become the new India head coach
According to a recent report in Dainik Bhaskar, the 2007 World T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup winner Gambhir is all set to take over the post of head coach from Dravid.
“We have held talks with Gambhir to become the head coach of the Indian team. He will replace the outgoing Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup,” a BCCI source privy to the developments told Dainik Bhaskar.
The report further added that Gambhir told the BCCI he would only accept the job offer if he got to decide on the support staff. Gambhir’s demand was accepted by the board. The board is likely to make an official announcement on Gambhir’s appointment as the new head coach later this month.
Would love to coach the Indian national side: Gambhir
Earlier this month, Gambhir, who was on a personal visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), paid a visit to the sports medicine department at the Medeor Hospital. During the interaction with the students at an event there, Gambhir expressed his thoughts that he would love to coach the Indian national side.
“I have not answered this question, although a lot of people have asked me. But I have to answer you now. I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well,” Gambhir said.
“It is 140 crore Indians who will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless,” he added.
