Gautam Gambhir to earn more than Rahul Dravid as India head coach, announcement delayed due to salary negotiations – Reports

Gautam Gambhir is most likely to become Indian Cricket Team’s next head coach.
The announcement of the new Indian head coach by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is delayed as they are negotiating the pay details with front-runner Gautam Gambhir. Reports have suggested that Gambhir is likely to get more money than former coach Rahul Dravid got during his tenure.
Rahul Dravid, who had taken over as head coach in 2021 after the T20 World Cup that year, guided India to the finals of World Test Championship 2021-23 and the ODI World Cup 2023, losing both to Australia. India also made it to the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup and won the Asia Cup in 2023.
The board’s Cricket Advisory Committee has already interviewed two contenders for the position of head coach, Gambhir and WV Raman, and an official announcement is pending. Gambhir is almost certainly going to take over as head coach.
Gautam Gambhir has no experience in coaching a team but was the mentor of the IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants in two IPL seasons and IPL 2024, guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title as their mentor.
Gautam Gambhir doing hard negotiations with BCCI about the head coach salary
The former India cricketer Gambhir was seen filming a farewell video for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens, indicating the early end of his second stint with the franchise after helping them win the IPL after a decade.
When the BCCI advertised for coaches, they stated that the compensation is ‘flexible and commensurate with experience’. Gambhir and the BCCI appear to be still debating the ideal salary for the former Indian cricketer to lead the Indian side to even greater success.
Gambhir is expected to draw a higher salary than the previous coach, Dravid, whose remuneration was around ₹12 crore per year. It is expected that the moment the remuneration deal is finalized, the BCCI will announce Gautam Gambhir’s name as the next India head coach.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that the next Indian head coach’s first assignment will be the tour of Sri Lanka where India will play three ODIs and as many T20Is in July-August.
