The Cricket Advisory Committee will interview Gautam Gambhir on June 18, Tuesday.
Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir is inching closer to sealing the position of Indian men’s cricket team’s head coach.
He is set to be interviewed on a Zoom call by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which comprises Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik, on Tuesday, June 18.
Interestingly, according to a report in The Indian Express, Gautam Gambhir was the only candidate to have applied for the job. The board invited applications last month as Rahul Dravid had confirmed that he won’t be seeking an extension to his tenure that will conclude at the end of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Gautam Gambhir is the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and recently propelled them to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title in IPL 2024 where they were led by Shreyas Iyer. Gambhir had previously been the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants and helped them to playoffs in consecutive seasons.
The BCCI is expected to confirm Gambhir’s appointment as the new head coach by the end of this month.
“We are conducting an interview session for candidates for the post of head coach and selector. The CAC will submit its recommendation to the BCCI and the board will make an official announcement thereafter,” a BCCI source told The Indian Express.
If the report of Gambhir being the only candidate to apply for the role is true, then the 42-year-old will become the next head coach of the Rohit Sharma-led team. However, this means that Gambhir would then have to leave his position as the KKR’s mentor.
