Gautam Gambhir is the front-runner to become the next Indian head coach.
The 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir, praised the legendary duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, following their announcement to retire from T20I cricket.
After winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy by defeating South Africa in the grand finale at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, the great Indian pair of Rohit and Kohli bid adieu to T20 internationals.
After winning Player of the Match award for his 76 runs in the final, Virat Kohli confirmed his retirement from the shortest format during post-match chat with commentator Harsha Bhogle. Kohli’s 76 is now the highest score by an Indian batter in a T20 World Cup final.
Soon after Kohli’s retirement, Rohit also bid adieu to the shortest format. The veteran opener announced his decision during the post-match press conference. In the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit was the second-highest run scorer, with 257 runs to his name in eight matches.

Following announcements from Rohit and Kohli, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, praised the duo. Gambhir said that both are great players and have done so much for Indian cricket. Gambhir also remained confident that the veteran Indian duo will contribute in ODI and test cricket for the national side.
“What better than finishing off the T20 career with a World Cup win. They are both great players and have done so much for Indian cricket. I want to congratulate them and wish them all the best. They will play One Day and Test cricket. I am sure they are going to keep contributing to the success of the country and team,” Gambhir said.
“The entire nation is very happy. I want to congratulate Rohit Sharma and the entire team…,” Gambhir added.
