[Watch] Hardik Pandya gets booed by Ahmedabad crowd on captaincy debut for MI in IPL 2024
MI captain Hardik Pandya got booed by Ahmedabad crowd harshly on Sunday evening.
Newly appointed Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya was brutally booed and trolled by the Ahmedabad crowd during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 24.
The incident happened during the toss when Pandya opted to field first, and soon after this, crowd started booing him. It is to be noted that Pandya is the former GT skipper and led the Gujarat-based franchise to a title win in the IPL 2022 edition. Under Hardikās leadership, GT went to their second straight final, but they suffered a heartbreaking defeat against the Chennai Super Kings in the the finals last year.
Five-time champions paid a hefty amount of Rs. 15 crore to Gujarat-based franchise in a trade deal to bring back Pandya. However, they let-go of Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to balance their purse and make the process of on-boarding their all-rounder Pandya smoother.
However, this marked a significant leadership change for the Mumbai with Pandya returning to the franchise after leading the Titans for two IPL seasons. Pandya previously played for Mumbai Indians, contributing significantly to their trophy wins in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
Here is the viral video:
āWe are gonna bowl first. Looks like a decent track, might get better if the dew arrives. Feels good to be back. My birthplace is Gujarat, a lot of success came in Gujarat, very grateful to the crowd and this state. My cricketing birth happened in Mumbai, so really good to be be back. Itās been almost two weeks, we started the camp. Boys are very eager to go out there and perform. We had wonderful practice matches and practice nets. All are looking good. The excitement is a different feeling. We have four quicks, three spinners and seven batters. Making sure all the departments are looked after,ā MI skipper Hardik Pandya said after winning the toss.
āFeels very excited, to be able to captain at a stadium where I have a lot of fond memories. This has been one of our strengths, the last couple of seasons the support that weāve got from the fans has been tremendous for us. I was here a week prior before this game, played a practice match, had a couple of practice sessions. Everyone is looking good, everyone is looking fit.ā said GT captain Shubman Gill at the toss.
We have got three players making debuts for GT ā Umesh bhai, Spencer and Omarzai. There are so many players who will be making their debut later this season. There is Sushant from the U-19s, Sai Sudharsan has been doing well for us in the last couple of sessions.ā Gill concluded.
