Virat Kohli scored 24 runs in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Senior India batsman Virat Kohli looked sublime on his return to ODI cricket in the first ODI against Sri Lanka on Friday. However, his knock was cut short by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga as the right-hander was trapped lbw.

This was Kohli’s first ODI match since the World Cup 2023 final last November against Australia. India were given a target of 231 runs on a pitch that aided spin bowling.

The visitors got off to a flyer through captain Rohit Sharma’s sizzling knock of 58 runs off 47 balls, which included three sixes and seven fours.

Kohli took over from Rohit and creamed a couple of handsome fours off left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage, which included a majestic slog sweep, a shot Kohli rarely plays.

However, his innings came to an end when Hasaranga, Kohli’s format’s Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate, got him lbw in the 24th over of India’s innings.

To a length ball from Hasaranga, Kohli rocked on the back foot and looked to nudge the ball on the leg side. However, the ball skidded off the surface and caught him a tad late on his stroke. The ball hit Kohli’s leg right in front of the middle stump and the umpire was quick to raise his finger.

Kohli had a brief chat with his batting partner, Shreyas Iyer, and took the review. However, it was to no avail as the ball was projected to be crashing into the stumps. Kohli was already near the dressing room by the time the third umpire confirmed the decision.
