Confusion over Hardik Pandya’s future with Mumbai Indians grew after he missed LSG match in IPL 2026.

The absence of Hardik Pandya from the recent game of Mumbai Indians (MI) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has created a huge buzz. Fans were surprised when he did not come out for the toss. Instead, Suryakumar Yadav walked out as captain for MI. Many rumours have been surfacing on the internet that Pandya will be transferred to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which further caused the confusion. 

This unexpected move led to many rumours on social media. Some unverified reports even claimed that Pandya has been removed as captain. MI have struggled badly this season. They had lost seven out of their first nine matches under Pandya, which added more pressure on the skipper.

Pandya’s own performance has also not been great. He has scored only 146 runs in eight matches. With the ball, he has taken just four wickets. As MI faced LSG at the Wankhede Stadium, fans were left guessing about what really happened with Pandya.

The truth is much simpler than the rumors. MI have not sacked Hardik Pandya as captain. The franchise confirmed at toss that he missed the match due to a back spasm. It was a fitness issue, not a leadership decision.

The reports in Indian Express also suggested that Pandya’s captaincy is safe and the franchise will continue to back Pandya as they do not see the team’s struggles as a reflection of his leadership.

After the match, MI opener Ryan Rickelton shared an update. He said, “I don’t know when he is expected to be back or the extent of his injury.” This shows that even teammates were unsure about the situation earlier.

Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav also said at the toss that Pandya was “feeling unwell” before the game. This further confirmed that it was a health concern. The team management continues to support Pandya despite poor results this season.

MI’s struggles are not only about captaincy. The team has not adapted well to the fast-changing T20 style. Their batting and bowling have both been inconsistent. Even though Suryakumar Yadav is an experienced leader, MI have won only one out of two matches under him this season.

For now, Pandya remains the captain. MI still believe they can improve in the remaining matches. A few strong performances could change their season quickly.
