"Historic first win..." Twitter lights up as USA register maiden win in ICC T20 World Cup

Right-handed batter Aaron Jones blasted 94* runs in 40 balls against Canada to take USA to a 7-wicket win.

The United States of America (USA) recorded their first-ever victory in the ICC T20 World Cup history when they thumped neighbours Canada by 7 wickets in the opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Both teams made their T20 World Cup debuts on Saturday night (Sunday morning IST) at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas to kickstart the tournament. Aaron Jones produced a stunning innings to take his side over the line in the chase of the target of 195 with 14 balls to spare.

Jones hammered 10 sixes in his entertaining knock of 94* runs in 40 balls and cracked only four fours. At the other end, Andries Gous hit 65 runs in 46 balls. Their partnership of 131 (58) blew away Canada in the USA vs CAN contest in Dallas.

USA captain Monank Patel won the toss and elected to bowl first. Canada piled up 194 runs, which was until then the highest total in ICC T20 World Cup history by an Associate nation. Opener Navneet Dhaliwal scored 61 runs in 44 balls and number 4 batter Nicholas Kirton whacked 51 runs in 31 balls. Shreyas Movva, the wicket-keeper, provided the finish with 32* (16).

Canada must have felt ahead in the match when the hosts lost two wickets for 42 runs in 6.3 overs. But from thereon, it was the Gous and Jones show, as the pair walloped 131 runs together in only 58 balls. By the time Gous was out, the duo had put their side in a winning position. Jones sealed the match with a couple of sixes.
