The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 race is getting tighter with every series, and India now find themselves in a difficult position after the second Test against Sri Lanka ended in a draw. While India won the two-match series 1-0 after the victory in Galle, they missed a big chance to collect a full 24 points from the Colombo Test.
With this draw, India are currently at fifth spot in the ICC WTC points table with 68 points from 11 tests. Their Points Percentage (PCT) has dropped to 51.22, putting them behind Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh. With only seven Tests left in their current WTC campaign, every game will now be important for the Shubman Gill-led side.
Australia are currently leading the table with an 80.00 PCT, while defending champions South Africa are second with 75.00. New Zealand are third at 72.22, followed by Bangladesh at 55.56. India are just below Bangladesh, and this shows how important it is for them to win upcoming matches.
The biggest challenge for India is that the remaining seven Tests are against two strong teams. India will travel to New Zealand for a two-test series in November before hosting Australia for five Tests in early 2027. Both series could have a major impact on India’s chances of reaching the WTC Final.

India’s best option is to win as many of their remaining seven Tests as possible. A clean sweep would give India 84 more points and take their total to 152 points. Their final PCT would rise to 70.37%.
A 70.37 PCT would put India in a very strong position and could be enough to finish in the top two. However, even winning all seven Tests would not mathematically guarantee qualification because the final result will also depend on how Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh perform.
The two-Test series in New Zealand would be one of the most important parts of India’s WTC campaign. India have struggled in New Zealand in recent years and have not won a Test there since long.
India also suffered a 3-0 home series defeat against New Zealand in their last Test meeting. Winning both Tests in New Zealand would give India a huge boost before the five-Test series against Australia.
After New Zealand, India will host Australia in a five-Test series and playing at home gives India an important advantage, but Australia currently sit at the top of the WTC table and will be a tough opponent.

The draw in Colombo has therefore reduced India’s chances for the WTC Final. A 60% or lower PCT could make qualification much harder because India would then have to depend heavily on other teams dropping points.
