From Group 2, England and South Africa have qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

We have our two semi-finalists from Group 2 of the Super 8 round: defending champions England and South Africa have qualified for the knockout stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, eliminating the USA and West Indies.

These results were confirmed on June 23. First, England utterly hammered the USA by 10 wickets at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Adil Rashid (2/13) and Chris Jordan (4/10) starred with the ball to restrict USA to 115. Then, Jos Buttler blasted 83* runs off 38 balls, which included fives consecutive sixes to Harmeet Singh, to continue England’s campaign.

Then, in the night game at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, hosts West Indies and South Africa contested in a last-ball thriller in what had been turned into a virtual quarter-final. West Indies posted 135 on the board. Due to rain, South Africa were set a revised target of 123 runs in 17 overs.

The Proteas almost crumbled under pressure. However, Marco Jansen held his nerves in the end to take South Africa over the line with five balls to spare.

Group 1

The two semi-finalists from Group 1 will be decided after the remaining two games: India vs Australia and Afghanistan vs Bangladesh. Right now, all four teams are alive in the semis race. India, though, need to avoid a big loss to Australia, who face effectively a must-win prospect against Rohit Sharma’s team as they have the same number of points as Afghanistan.

Afghanistan would be praying for Australia’s loss, which would mean a victory over Bangladesh will take them to the semi-finals. Bangladesh are all but out of the competition, requiring two huge, almost improbable results.

Group 2

South Africa finished Group 2 of the Super 8 round at the top of the standings with three wins in three games, after winning all their four group-stage matches. Defending champions England won two out of three matches.

West Indies lost two out of three games while the USA couldn’t record a single win in the Super 8.
