Explained: ICC WTC 2023-25 final qualification scenario for India, South Africa and Australia
The ICC WTC 2023-25 final is scheduled to be played at Lord’s in June.
The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 is into its last phase as now only 10 test matches are left in the cycle before the final.
Lord’s is set to host the ICC WTC 2023-25 final in June. Australia are the defending champions.
Following Sri Lanka’s 0-2 loss to South Africa, the race to the final is effectively now between three teams: India, South Africa and Australia.
In this cycle, India have three more tests left against Australia, who will play Sri Lanka in a two-test series. South Africa will next host Pakistan for two test matches, their last series in this cycle.
Currently, the Proteas are at the top of the ICC WTC standings with PCT of 63.33%, followed by Australia with 60.71%, and India with 57.29.
ICC WTC 2023-25 final qualification scenario for India:
India need two wins and a draw from their three remaining tests against Australia to qualify for the final without depending on other teams’ results.
If India lose the BGT 2024-25 by a 3-2 scoreline, they would then need South Africa to lose both tests against Pakistan and hope Australia don’t win both tests in Sri Lanka.
ICC WTC 2023-25 final qualification scenario for South Africa:
South Africa are the best placed to reach the final. They only need one win out of two tests vs Pakistan to secure a place in the final. Even a 1-1 result would also do for them.
However, if South Africa lose the series 0-1, then both India and Australia could finish above them.
ICC WTC 2023-25 final qualification scenario for Australia:
If Australia win two matches out of the three tests left against India, they would book a place in the ICC WTC 2023-25 final, even if they lost 2-0 in Sri Lanka.
But, if they lose the BGT 2024-25 by 3-2, then would need to win both their matches against Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka and Pakistan are only mathematically alive in the race to the final. They would need a spate of results to go their way, the chances of which are almost nil.
