India and Australia currently lead the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points table.

The first test match of the two-match test series between West Indies and South Africa ended in a draw at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain in Trinidad.

The test was significantly impacted by rain and thus, the full quota of overs couldn’t be played across the five days. 295 overs were bowled in this test out of the possible 450. The match was drawn in the last session of day five on a tantalising note with West Indies needing 97 more runs with five wickets in hand.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors posted 357 runs after batting for 117.4 overs spread over more than two days. Captain Bavuma top-scored with 86 and opener Tony de Zorzi scored 78.

In reply, West Indies were bundled for 233 as Keshav Maharaj bowled brilliantly to return with figures of 40-15-76-4.

In a bid to push for a victory, South Africa, who had taken a 124-run lead in the first innings, batted aggressively, scoring at a run rate of 5.96 in their second innings. The Proteas scored 173/3 and declared, setting a target of 298 runs for the hosts. Tristan Stubbs smashes 68 runs off 50 balls.

South Africa needed to take 10 wickets in the remaining 72 overs to win the game but due to rain, only 56.2 overs were possible. West Indies’ Alick Athanaze played an entertaining innings of 92 runs off 116 balls.

The result of the WI vs SA test match didn’t have much effect on the World Test Championship points table as both teams remain in the bottom three spots. Both West Indies and South Africa stand very little chance of reaching the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 final.

India and Australia are the strongest contenders to meet in the final next year, which is scheduled to be played in June 2025 at Lord’s in England.
