Rohit Sharma lauded Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube for their partnership of 67 runs against USA.

India skipper Rohit Sharma heaped praise on Suryakumar Yadav for going against his naturally aggressive style to play a “different game” as required against the USA in their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 encounter.

In the chase of 111 on a pace-friendly pitch at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, India stumbled early against the USA, losing both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma with only 10 runs on the board.

Suryakumar Yadav, who had scores of 2 and 7 in India’s previous two matches, formed crucial partnerships with Rishabh Pant and Shivam Dube to take India home. Yadav and Pant added 29 (32) together before the left-hander was bowled by Ali Khan.

Dube and Suryakumar then formed a match-winning partnership of 67* off 65 balls to seal the chase in 18.2 overs and secure India’s spot in the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Suryakumar raised his half-century in 49 balls, which is the slowest fifty by an Indian in the men’s T20 World Cup. But that was the kind of knock that was required on the New York pitch as India recorded the highest successful chase at this venue in this tournament.

“That is what you expect from experienced players”: Rohit Sharma

Rohit was impressed with Yadav’s knock and his temperament in restraining himself from playing attacking shots. The Indian captain was happy with Suryakumar using his experience to step up in a tricky chase. Rohit also credited Dube, who scored 31* off 35 balls.

Rohit told Star Sports, “He showed he’s got a different game as well, that is what you expect from experienced players. To come out and bat differently if the situation demands, that is what Surya did. The partnership with Dube was very important for us. In the end, to take us home was a great effort.

“We knew it was going to be a tough task scoring those many runs [111], but credit to us. At the end, we held our nerves, got that partnership as well. We lost wickets upfront but credit to Surya and Dube to show that maturity and take the game till the end.”

India’s remaining Group A match is against Canada.
