India will face Australia in their last Super 8 match.

Defending champions England and Aiden Markram’s South Africa booked their places in the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 by winning their last Super 8 games.

Buttler’s team hammered the USA by 10 wickets. Then, South Africa defeated hosts West Indies in a last-over thriller by three wickets in a rain-affected game.

It has been an exciting Super 8 round because no semi-finalist was confirmed until the last four matches began. Two matches of Group 1 remain.

South Africa finished at the top of the Group 2 standings with three wins in three games, followed by England, who won two out of three matches.

In Group 2, the matches left are India vs Australia and Afghanistan vs Bangladesh. While right now India, who lead the Group 2 standings with two wins in two games, haven’t yet confirmed their berth in the semi-final, they are almost there considering their net run rate of +2.425 is far better than Australia’s +0.223 and Afghanistan’s -0.650.

India are likely to finish at the top of the Group 2 standings even if they lose to Australia. For Australia to go above India on the points table, they will need to defeat Rohit Sharma’s team by 41 runs or more, which is an unlikely scenario. The other semi-finalists from this group will be either Australia or Afghanistan.

Who will India meet in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024?

The team that finishes at the top of one group will meet the second-positioned team of the other group in the semi-final. Since England have ended Group 2 in the second slot, and India are likely to end at the top of Group 1, then an IND vs ENG semi-final is looking likely on the cards. This will be a repeat of the semi-final between these two teams two years ago in Adelaide, where England hammered Rohit’s side by 10 wickets.

If somehow India lose by this margin to Australia and Afghanistan don’t pip over India on NRR either, then they will meet South Africa, who finished at the top in their group.

Also, to note is that regardless of India’s position in the Super 8 group, should they qualify for the semi-finals, they will play semi-final 2 in Guyana, which has been scheduled for 8:00 PM IST. The semi-final 1 is scheduled for 6:00 AM IST in Trinidad.
