Ayush Mhatre was appointed as the India U19 captain for Asia Cup 2025.
The newly appointed India U19 captain, Ayush Mhatre, stole the limelight in the second round of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. Playing for Mumbai, Mhatre scored 110 runs off just 53 balls against Vidarbha to guide his team to a convincing victory.
With this win against Vidarbha, Mumbai are off to a blazing start in the domestic T20 competition. The defending champions have won the first two matches, establishing themselves as prominent contenders for the title once again.
Ayush Mhatre goes berserk in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025
Mumbai were chasing a challenging target of 193. The 18-year-old took charge of the chase after Mumbai lost two early wickets in the power play. Veteran Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for a duck while Hardik Tamore could only score one run.
The defending champions were struggling with 21/2 on the scoreboard when the India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav walked in. Surya and Mhatre forged an outstanding partnership to bring Mumbai back into the game. When Yadav got out, the score was 109/3, and Mumbai were firmly back in the chase.
Ayush Mhatre continued to smash the bowlers out of the park on the other end, and he was assisted by another Indian international, Shivam Dube. The duo completed the chase with 13 balls remaining, and Mhatre ended up unbeaten with 110 runs at a strike rate of 207.54.
Suryakumar Yadav hails Ayush Mhatre for his century
The Indian T20I skipper congratulated the young Ayush Mhatre for his century on his Instagram handle. On his Instagram story, Surya wrote, “What a player. What a knock,” praising the youngster for his match-winning knock. The next few months will be important for Ayush Mhatre before the U19 Asia Cup 2025 and Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
The youngster will lead India U19 at the ACC Men’s Under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai, which will start from December 12. The India U-19 team is preparing for the upcoming ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup. The tournament will be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia, starting on January 15.
