A total of five Indian batsmen amassed over 300 runs in T20Is in 2024.

The year 2024 was one of the most important years for the Indian cricket team in the T20I format. India won their second ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title, going unbeaten throughout the tournament in the USA and West Indies.

Apart from that, and equally importantly, the Indian T20I side underwent a smooth transition as Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Virat Kohli retired from the format while Jasprit Bumrah played only a handful of matches.

Despite the first-choice players often being rested from bilateral T20I series, India finished the year with 24 wins out of 26 completed matches, winning all their five bilateral series and winning all their matches at the T20 World Cup.

Indian batsmen adopted an aggressive approach this year, binning the conservative and risk-averse mindset from previous years and piled up huge scores. This resulted in the batsmen notching up seven T20I centuries.

In this article, we will look at India’s top five run-scorers in T20I this year.

Top five Indian batsmen with the most T20I runs in 2024:

5. Tilak Varma – 306 runs

It is quite astonishing that Tilak Varma finds himself on this list, given he has batted only five times this year and been part of only two series. Until the Sri Lanka series, he wasn’t even part of the squad but injury to Shivam Dube meant Varma was recalled.

In South Africa, he pounced on his chances. After batting at No. 4 in the first two T20Is against the Proteas, he asked captain Suryakumar Yadav to be promoted to No. 3. The skipper obliged and that unleashed the best version of Varma.

The young left-hander slammed centuries in Centurion and Johannesburg to become only the fifth player in T20I cricket and the second Indian to hit two consecutive hundreds.

In five innings this year, Tilak amassed 306 runs at an average of 102. It was his strike rate of 187 that stand out among the five batsmen on this list.

4. Hardik Pandya – 352 runs

While he had a terrible Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign, Hardik Pandya was in a beast mode for the national side, providing crucial runs often lower down the order.

In 14 outings, Pandya scored 352 runs at an average of 44 and strike rate of 150. His lone fifty came against Bangladesh in a Super 8 game at the T20 World Cup. In the semi-final against England, he cracked 23 off 13 towards the end. He produced quickfire cameos in the bilateral series later on.

3. Rohit Sharma – 378 runs

The man credited heavily for the turnaround in the mindset of Indian batsman, Rohit Sharma bowed out of T20Is in the best way possible, having led India to the T20 world title.

Apart from his outstanding leadership, Rohit was a key figure in the batting department as he finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the competition, hitting three fifties, including a 92 against Australia and 57 against England in consecutive games. At the start of the year, he smashed a century against Afghanistan in Bengaluru.

Sharma finished the year with 378 runs in 11 innings at an average of 42 and strike rate of 160 with one ton and three fifties.

2. Suryakumar Yadav – 429 runs

It wasn’t the best best of the years in T20Is for Suryakumar Yadav, but of course, we are judging him by his own lofty standards. In his four years of T20I cricket, his average of 26 was the lowest he’s managed in a year. Yet, he still ends up as the batsman with the second-most runs in 2024 among Indian batsman.

Suryakumar racked up 429 runs in 17 knocks and struck at a strike rate of 151. He cracked four fifties this year, two of them coming in the T20 World Cup.

1. Sanju Samson – 436 runs

2024 turned out to be Sanju Samson’s best year in T20Is. That is despite him registering five ducks in the 12 times he batted.

Among Indian batsmen, Sanju Samson finished with the most T20I runs in 2024. He plundered 436 runs at an average of 43 and a bumper strike rate of 180, recording three centuries and one fifty.

When he bagged two consecutive ducks against Sri Lanka, it seemed that he would be dropped once again from the side. However, Gambhir and Suryakumar backed him and promoted him to the top of the order, a position he prefers the best in this format.

Samson repaid their faith by thumping three centuries in his last five innings. He has certainly cemented his place in the squad for the future even when the first-choice openers and keeper are available.
