In today’s times, just leading the team to an ICC title is not enough to retain the captaincy.

Winning an ICC title is regarded as the biggest achievement in international cricket, and captains who achieve this feat are often remembered as legends. Several captains in the past have led India to these memorable global triumphs.

On the contrary, a disastrous performance in an ICC trophy can lead to a captain’s eviction. However, even winning an ICC title does not guarantee a long-term role as captain. Surprisingly, some Indian captains were sacked just after winning an ICC title.

In Indian cricket, two captains have been removed after leading the team to ICC trophies. Below, we take a look at both of them.

Captains who were sacked after leading India to an ICC title

1. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma succeeded Virat Kohli as India’s T20I captain in November 2021 and subsequently took the leadership of all three formats. The right-handed batsman bagged his first big achievement by leading India to the title in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

In March 2025, he also led the team to the title in the ICC Champions Trophy, where India defeated New Zealand in the final. After the tournament, he retired from test cricket, which forced the BCCI to appoint Shubman Gill as the new test captain.

Subsequently, Gill was also appointed ODI captain after a few months during the tour of Australia in October.

2. Suryakumar Yadav

When Rohit Sharma left the T20I captaincy in 2024 after the World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as the new skipper. Under his leadership, the Men in Blue registered a stunning winning record of over 80% for about two years. They never lost a T20I series under his captaincy.

The right-handed batsman led India to the Asia Cup 2025 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 titles. Despite these triumphs, Suryakumar’s poor form with the bat over the last year became the talk of the town.

He also struggled to score runs during the T20 World Cup 2026, managing just one half-century. Even in IPL 2026, he flopped with his batting for Mumbai Indians (MI). Considering his poor form and age, the BCCI has appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain in the shortest format.
