The Indian cricket team was supposed to leave Barbados on Sunday night, but couldn’t because of the hurricane.

The Indian cricket team’s arrival in India has been delayed because the contingent is stranded in the West Indies as the Barbados airport has been shut down due to the “extremely dangerous” hurricane Beryl. The hurricane Beryl is said to be “extremely dangerous” and has been put in Category 4.

The winners of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 tournament, Team India, were supposed to leave Barbados on Sunday night, but couldn’t because the airport was closed before the departure of their flight. South Africa, who finished as the runners-up, had left earlier on Sunday.

While the fans await the return of the T20 World Cup heroes, the players, along with their families and the support staff members, are stuck in their hotel, Hilton Hotel, in Barbados.

A BCCI source close to the developments told News 18, “Like everywhere, services are affected at the team hotel too. The airport is shut so no clarity on departure as of now because of the extremely dangerous hurricane. The BCCI is coordinating to ensure the entire contingent reaches back home safely.”

Indian cricket team to be felicitated by PM Narendra Modi

Cricket Next has reported that the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team will be felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, with the team still stuck in Barbados, this plan could be scrapped.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is also with the team in Barbados, told reporters, “Like you we are also stuck here. After the travel plans are clear, we will think about the felicitation.”

The BCCI is now pondering over the possibility of a charter flight directly from Barbados to New Delhi. But, they are awaiting the resumption of services at the Barbados airport.

India defeated South Africa in the final by seven runs to clinch their second T20 World Cup trophy, 17 years after winning the inaugural edition. Rohit joined Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni as India’s World Cup-winning captain. Rohit and Virat Kohli, who was the Man of the Match in the final, have taken retirements from the shortest international format.
