Indian cricket team jersey over the years at ICC T20 World Cup

The Indian cricket team won the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup 2007 in South Africa.

The Indian cricket team’s journey at the ICC T20 World Cup has been etched with some of the greatest moments till now. From winning the inaugural edition in 2007 to heartbreaks in other editions, the Men in Blue have consistently faced many challenges over the years at the ICC tournament.

The Men in Blue are known for wearing stylish jerseys through the years. Each T20 World Cup has seen a different jersey for the Indian cricket team. Apart from showcasing style, the jerseys also evoke a sense of national pride. Let’s take a look at the evolution of the Men in Blue’s T20 World Cup jerseys from 2007 to 2024.

1. 2007 jersey

The inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup was hosted in South Africa in 2007. During that tournament, the Men in Blue wore a pale blue jersey, which gave off an old-school vibe.

The MS Dhoni-led India scripted history by clinching the first ICC T20 title. During that tournament, the young side led by Dhoni lost just one match against New Zealand in the Super Eight round.

2. 2009 jersey

At the 2009 T20 World Cup, the Indian cricket team jersey transitioned from light blue to a slightly deeper shade of blue. It had a similar kind of pattern. Under the leadership of Dhoni, India reached the Super Eight phase but failed to defend their title.

3. 2010 jersey

Similar to the 2009 attire ,The Indian team wore the deep blue with orange collars along with the Indian tri-colour at the T20 World Cup 2010. India were placed in Group C along with South Africa and Afghanistan. The side won both league matches and finished at the top of the Group C standings.

However, the Men in Blue couldn’t cross the Super Eight hurdle as they were eliminated from the tournament.

4. 2012 jersey

The Men in Blue wore the same jersey at the T20 World Cup 2012 that they wore during the ODI World Cup 2011.

Dhoni-led India once again failed to reach the semi-finals, as they were eliminated after reaching the Super Eight of the T20 World Cup 2012. 

5. 2014 jersey

The T20 World Cup 2014 was hosted by Bangladesh. During that ICC tournament, the Indian side had a blue jersey with a pattern on the shoulders that had the colours of the Indian flag.

The Dhoni-led Men in Blue dominated the whole tournament and reached the grand finale by staying undefeated. However, Sri Lanka defeated India in the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup. 

6. 2016 jersey

The Indian side had a different style of jersey for the T20 World Cup 2016. The unique jersey had a blue pattern along with the reddish-orange pattern on the right side.

The 2016 edition provided Dhoni-led India the opportunity to add another ICC trophy to their cabinet. The Men in Blue started their campaign on a bad note by losing to New Zealand. The Indian side then bounced back by winning three consecutive matches to reach the semi-finals.

However, West Indies shattered India’s dream, as they lost to Daren Sammy’s side at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

7. 2021 jersey

The 2021 World T20 was held in the UAE. The Indian jersey, called the ‘Billion Cheers Jersey,’ was inspired by fans. The shirt came in shades of Prussian blue and royal blue.

Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, the Men in Blue had one of the worst T20 World Cups. The side lost their first two matches against arch-rivals Pakistan and New Zealand.

However, Kohli-led India bounced back by winning the remaining three games, but it was too late for them as they exited the group phase. This was the first time that India didn’t reach the Super Eight of the T20 World Cup. After this Kohli stepped down as the T20I skipper.

8. 2022 jersey

After wearing the lovely dark blue shirt at the 2021 World Cup, the Indian team switched to the lighter jersey at the T20 World Cup in 2022. The side wore a sky blue shirt and a deep colour pattern on the left at the 2022 edition.

The 2022 World Cup was held in Australia. Rohit Sharma captained the team. Once again, India dominated the whole tournament and reached the semi-finals without facing many challenges. However, Jos Buttler-led England defeated India in the semis by 10 wickets.

9. 2024 jersey

At the T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian cricket team will wear a new jersey that has tri-colour stripes on a V-shaped neck and the traditional Adidas stripes on saffron sleeves. Rohit Sharma will lead the Men in Blue. The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States of America and the West Indies.
