Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians repeated history of losing their opening IPL fixture as they lost to RCB in the first game of IPL 2023.

A dominant opening partnership by Royal Challengers Bengaluru opening duo kept Mumbai Indians' record intact in Indian Premier League. Mumbai Indians have lost all their opening games since 2013 and now again in IPL 2023. Captain Faf du Plessis and Former Captain Virat Kohli’s 148 runs partnership for the first wicket helped RCB chase down the target of 172 easily. Both Faf and Virat Kohli scored half–centuries. Mumbai were banking on Jofra Archer’s comeback but he also looked out of rhythm in his MI debut. Virat Kohli finished off nicely with his superb shot over long on for a six. Virat Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 82 with 6 fours and 5 sixes in 49 balls.

Top 4 put Mumbai in Backfoot, Youngsters step in

Since 2013 Mumbai have lost all their opening encounters. Their top order looked out of colour, they lost their top 4 wickets under 50 in 9 overs. Captain Rohit Sharma did not look happy with MI’s performance yet he is looking to bounce back in the next game. Captain Rohit was concerned about batting, “It was not the best start with the bat… this was a good pitch to bat on but we did not bat well”. Tilak verma with his 84 runs inning put Mumbai in good position to post a challenging target. Tilak impressed his captain with his approach. Captain Rohit heaped praises on Tilak and said, “Tilak is a positive person, talented as well. Some of the shots he played showed courage”.

Bumrah's absence is a concern for MI and Rohit

Struggling Mumbai Indians are yet to find their correct approach since IPL Mega Auction 2022. Rohit when asked about Jasprit Bumrah’s absence said that someone needs to step up and take the responsibility. Rohit added, “From the last 6 to 8 months I am used to playing without Bumrah. This is a different setup and someone needs to put their hands up and step up. We can’t keep dwelling on it”.

Good Homecoming for RCB, Faf - Virat made it more special

It was a good homecoming for RCB after 4 years. Captain Faf and Virat both had a magnificent partnership of 148 runs. Faf scored 73 runs in 43 balls and smashed 5 fours and 6 sixes. While Virat finished off the game and was unbeaten on 82, Both of them tamed the MI bowling. Faf Du Plessis was happy with the bowling performance of RCB. Faf said that Siraj in the powerplay had set the tone up for others and RCB’s bowlers stuck to the plans. Faf was also adjudged Player of the match for his inning and a superb partnership along with Virat Kohli. Faf was also in full praise of the Bengaluru crowd as well as his partner Virat and said, “My first time playing here as a home player and It’s a special feeling, Especially batting with Virat Kohli”. RCB will be traveling to Kolkata for their next game against KKR on 6th April. Mumbai will play against their arch – rival Chennai Super Kings at home on 8th April.
