Abhishek Sharma smashed 75* off 28 balls against LSG in Hyderabad.
In match No. 57 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, it was a phenomenal display of batting as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head showed no mercy to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bowling line-up as the hosts registered a 10-wicket win at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on May 8.
After being asked to field first, Hyderabad bowlers restricted Lucknow to a below-par total of 165/4 in 20 overs. Ayush Badoni (48*) and vice captain Nicholas Pooran (55*) saved the visitors and took them to a respectable total, but when the hosts came out to bat, if wasn’t even close to a par score.
While chasing just 166, in-form Hyderabad openers Abhishek (75* runs in 28 balls) and Head (30-ball 89*) came all gun-blazing against Lucknow’s bowling line-up. The duo hammered a match-winning partnership of 167 runs in just 58 balls to guide the hosts to a 10-wicket win.
This huge win has strengthened Hyderabad’s position for reaching the IPL 2024 playoffs, and their win also means the five-time champion Mumbai Indians are officially out of the tournament.
All Thanks to Yuvraj Singh and my father: Abhishek Sharma
After playing a blistering knock, Hyderabad opener Abhishek credited former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, former SRG coach Brian Lara. During the innings, Abhishek also completed 400 runs in the ongoing tournament. The youngster also thanked his first coach, his father.
“I think the hard work I put in before the tournament is showing now, thanks to Yuvi Paaji, Brian (Lara) as well and my father, who is my first coach,” Abhishek Sharma said during the post-match presentation.
In the ongoing edition, Sharma has played 12 matches and hammered 401 runs till now. His average is 36.45 with an explosive strike rate of 205.64 along with two half-centuries.
The message was clear: Abhishek Sharma opens up about SRH’s strategy
The stylish batter further added that the team management has given him clear instructions to play his natural game and he backed himself while coming into the IPL 2024. Abhishek also gave credit to his batting partner Head, for taking the pressure off him.
“I would never think of coming to such a tournament and playing at such a strike rate, but thanks to the team management. The message was clear from them and I backed myself. All the credit goes to him (Head). The way he starts against all bowlers.. he goes after them from the start and takes the pressure off. The bowlers told us (during the innings break) that it was getting better, but myself and Travis thought it was not doing much,” Abhishek Sharma added.
