CSK pacer Matheesha Pathirana has played just two matches in the IPL 2024 so far.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star pacer Matheesha Pathirana has been dealt with another injury blow, just days after returning from a hamstring strain. The right-arm speedster is out of the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition on April 5.
The 21-year-old Sri Lanka slinger sustained hamstring injury during the second T20I against Bangladesh in Sylhet last month, when he was unable to finish his spell. Later on, it was learnt that Pathirana “sustained a Grade 1 hamstring injury on his left leg.” This injury also ruled him out of the remainder of the series and also from the ODI Series. Reports also emerged about him missing the initial stages of the IPL 2024 season.
The 21-year-old Pathirana missed CSK’s opening fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 22. However, the defending champions CSK, hammered Bengaluru by six wickets, and Pathirana’s absence didn’t hurt the Super Kings.
On March 23rd, Pathirana flew to India after getting green signal from the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) to take part in the IPL 2024.
His manager Amila Kalugalage, also shared the fitness update after Pathirana fully recovered from his hamstring injury. The “Baby Malinga” then joined the CSK camp for the remaining matches of the IPL 2024 season.
The young pacer then played CSK’s next two matches in the ongoing 2024 edition. Pathirana first played against the Gujarat Titans on March 7 and then against the Delhi Capitals on March 13. So far in two outings, the right-arm pacer has picked up four wickets.
Matheesha Pathirana suffers injury again before Sunrisers Hyderabad clash
However, on April 5, during Chennai Super Kings’ second away game of the season, they were dealt with a blow as Pathirana got ruled out of the game owing to a niggle. The development was confirmed by CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad at the toss in Hyderabad.
The nature and severity of this new injury hasn’t been disclosed yet.
“It’s going pretty well, the group is responding well. Nothing much changes for me, obviously this is a new challenge, but I’m feeling good. Pathirana has a niggle – three changes for us, Moeen Ali, Theekshana and Mukesh Chowdhary come in. The bowlers are ready to go and so are the youngsters,” CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad said during toss.
