IPL 2024: Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant suspended for 1 match, find out why

Delhi Captails (DC) have suffered a major setback ahead of their do-or-die encounter in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 12. Capitals’ captain Rishabh Pant has been suspended for one match by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). 

In the ongoing edition, Rishabh-led Delhi are placed fifth with 12 points from as many games. There are still chances for them to reach the IPL 2024 playoffs if they emerge victorious in their remaining league stage games.

However, they have to win their remaining two games by a good margin as Delhi’s NRR currently stands at -0.316, while the top four teams have positive NRR.

In the IPL 2024, Pant is the highest run-getter for his franchise till now. The skipper has played 12 matches and smashed 413 runs at an impressive average of 41.30 and a strike rate of 156.44. Pant has three half-centuries to his name in the ongoing season.

Why has Rishabh Pant been handed a one-match suspension?

The Capitals’ skipper Pant was banned for one match for breaching the IPL code of conduct after his side maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 56 against Rajasthan Royals in Delhi on May 6. However, Delhi won the match by 20 runs.

Apart from getting suspended from one match, wicket-keeper Pant was also fined INR 30 lakhs for the offense. It is to be noted that this was the third time Rishab Pant was charged for the slow-over rate in the ongoing tournament.

Earlier, the southpaw was first fined INR 12 lakhs after the clash against defending champions Chennai Super Kings on March 31. Then Pant was slapped with fine of INR 24 lakhs for the same during the game against the Kolkata Knight Riders on April 4.

“Mr Rishabh Pant, Captain, Delhi Capitals has been fined and suspended for one match for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024,” the release said.

“As it was his team’s third offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 30 Lac and suspended for one match. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 12 Lac or 50 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the release added.
