IPL 2024: Devon Conway joins CSK camp in Chennai despite being ruled out of the tournament

Devon Conway was ruled out due to a fractured thumb.

New Zealand opener Devon Conway was ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 as he failed to recover in time from his broken thumb. This meant that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were without one of their top performers in the last two editions of IPL.

Conway has been one of CSK’s top batters since he was bought at the IPL 2022 mega auction. Conway scored 924 runs in 23 matches for CSK, including nine fifties and a top score of 92. During CSK’s title-winning season in 2023, he scored 671 runs in 16 matches at an average of 51 and a strike rate of nearly 140.

In Conway’s absence, Rachin Ravindra has opened the batting for Chennai. However, after a couple of excellent knocks to begin with, Ravindra has not wowed thus far.  

Conway fractured his thumb in the T20I series at home against Australia and while initially it was expected that the left-hander will return to CSK for the second half of the IPL 2024, later it was confirmed that he’ll miss the entire tournament.

CSK have already named England pacer Richard Gleeson as his replacement for the rest of IPL 2024.  

“Devon Conway has been ruled out of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to an injury. Conway, who represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK) throughout the last two IPL seasons, played 23 matches and scored 924 runs, which included 9 half-centuries and a highest score of 92*.

CSK have added Richard Gleeson to the squad for the remainder of the TATA IPL 2024. Gleeson has represented England in 6 T20Is and has 9 wickets against his name. Additionally, Gleeson has played 90 T20s and picked 101 T20 wickets,” the IPL said in a release.

However, now CSK revealed that Devon Conway has reached India and joined the CSK camp.

The CSK team shared a special picture of Conway, who was sitting on the pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The franchise captioned the post, “Dev at Anbuden.” In the image, Conway can be seen with a webbing on his left thumb.
